Agartala-Akhaura rail link in 30 months
The work on installation of the 15.054 km long railway to connect India's Agartala with Akhaura in Bangladesh will be completed in two and a half years, says a report by the Indian Express.
"Of the total track, a stretch of five kilometers will be on the Indian side and the rest in Bangladesh. The project would be completed in two and a half years," the report said on Wednesday quoting joint secretary AK Gupte of the ministry of external affairs in Agartala.
The total project cost, Rs 9.725 billion ( 972.52 crore), would be borne by the Indian government, Gupte said, adding the rail track on the Indian side would be funded by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region while the MEA would finance it for the Bangladesh side.
The fifth meeting of the Project Steering Committee comprising officials of Bangladesh and India was held while an eight-member team of Bangladesh led by Additional Secretary of the Roads and Railway Sashi Singh and a ten-member delegation of India led by Gupte participated in the meeting.
Quoting officials, the report said acquisition of land on the Indian side has already been started. New Delhi is keen to establish the rail link which will connect West Bengal and Tripura through Bangladesh.
The Agartala-Akhaura railway route will connect the Indian railways with the Bangladesh railways to improve connectivity and boost trade between the two countries.
