Hybrid beans grower becomes role-model to other farmers in Bogra

Our Correspondent

BOGRA, Oct 19: Golzer Hossain Bablu (60), an off-seasonal hybrid beans grower of Joypurpara village in Dupchanchia municipality area of the district, has become a role-model to other cultivators.

He, for the second time, has brought two-bighas of land under hybrid off-seasonal bean cultivation spending around Tk 0.12 million this year. He is now harvesting over one maund of the vegetable per week. Per maund of bean is now being sold at Tk 3000 to Tk 3200 in the local kitchen market. He said he is expecting to make a profit of Tk 0.4 million to 0.5 million in the current year if the weather condition remains favourable.

Last year, he had brought around 0.25 acre of land under bean farming spending Tk 9,000 and made a profit over Tk 50,000. He said he would earn more profit if he had sold the vegetable in the kitchen markets instead of selling to the wholesalers.

The elderly cultivator said that he used to cultivate paddy or sometimes vegetables on his two bighas of land.

Mr Bablu said he was inspired to grow the bean variety after reading a story of a farmer of Muladula in Pabna. Later he met the hybrid bean grower in Pabna and learnt its farming process. He also said he had bought seeds of Tk 2500 that time to start cultivating of it.

Upazila agriculture officer Golam Mostafa said many farmers are showing their interest to cultivate the off-seasonal vegetable after seeing the success of farmer Bablu.

DAE will provide all support to the farmers necessary to grow the bean variety, the official added.
