Sultan of Kelantan becomes Malaysia’s next King

Malaysia's Conference of Rulers recently elected the Sultan of Kelantan as the next king of Malaysia.

Muhammad V, 47, will serve a five-year term under Malaysia's unique rotational monarchy system. The Sultan of Perak was picked as the new king's deputy, reports UNB on Wednesday quoting Channel NewsAsia.

The reign of the present Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah from the state of Kedah, comes to an end in December. Muhammad V, formerly known as Tuanku Muhammad Faris Petra, was crowned Sultan of Kelantan in 2010.

A post on the Johor Southern Tigers football club's Facebook page said the Sultan of Johor turned down an invitation to become the next king.

"The Sultan of Johor has respectfully declined the offer to be the Yang Di Pertuan Agong in order to make way for the Sultan of Kelantan," the post said. "This was all done as the Sultan insists on giving his utmost focus on the sovereignty of Johor and the welfare of the people of Johor." –RH
