ACC nabs ex-Agrani Bank branch manager
RAJSHAHI, Oct 17: The Anti-Corruption Commission in Rajshahi has arrested a former Agrani Bank officer from the city for his alleged involvement in embezzlement of more than Tk 10 million.
Police arrested Rafiqul Islam (61), former manager of Baju Bagha branch of Agrani Bank in Bagha upazila, from Bheripara crossing area in Rajshahi city around 3:00 pm on Monday, said Sheikh Faiyaz Alam, Deputy Director of the ACC of Rajshahi division.
He said Rafiqul Alam retired as a branch manager one year ago. Several days before his retirement, Rafiqul opened several bank accounts in the name of fake business enterprises and disbursed Tk 11.3 million as loan in favour of those business enterprises.
The bank authorities, however, failed to trace those business enterprises. It was alleged that Rafiqul misappropriated the money disbursed as loan to those organisations.
In July, incumbent manager of the branch Isahaq Ali filed four cases against Rafiqul on charge of misappropriation of Tk 13 million. ACC started investigating the cases and issued warrant of arrest against him (Rafiqul). But soon after filing the cases, Rafiqul went into hiding.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of ACC led by its Additional Director Alamgir Hossain arrested Rafiqul from Bheripara. Later, he was produced before the court which sent him to jail.
