Farmers start harvesting early variety of beans
Cultivators in Naogaon district are now passing busy time in harvesting the early variety of beans. The growers had started cultivating the vegetable in mid-May to June.
During a recent visit at different wholesale markets in the district, this correspondent found the bean is now being sold at Tk 2,800 to Tk 3,200 per maund. Its retail market rate is Tk 90 to Tk 110.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said at least 3,400 hectares of land have been brought under bean cultivation in the eleven upazilas of the district this season. No official production target was fixed.
Earlier the vegetable cultivation of bean was limited on homesteads in the district. But now the farming is extended to the vast areas of land, sources said.
Anwarul Islam, a farmer of village Barshail under Sadar Upazila, said he cultivated early variety of bean on 50 decimals of land and earned Tk 90,000 from the half of the produce.
Satyabrata Saha, deputy director of DAE, said the cultivation of early variety of bean is increasing in the district gradually due to modern pest management system introduced by the DAE.
