Potato hoarders making hefty profits in Bogra
BOGRA, Oct 16: Potato hoarders across the district are making hefty profit this season as they are selling the commodity to the wholesalers at higher rates than in the previous year.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said around 300 thousand (three lakh tonnes) of potato were produced in the Rabi season in all twelve upazilas of the district with the assistance of local agriculture offices.
Timely plantation of seeds, coupled with assistance of from the DAE and NGOs, led to the bumper production of the cash crop, the DAE sources added.
The hoarders bought every maund of potato from farmers at Tk 400-450 during the harvest and kept the produce in cold storages seven months back, costing only Tk 150 per maund. Now they are selling the potato at Tk 800-850 per maund. They were very much optimistic about such profit.
Muslim Uddin, a potato hoarder of Merai village, said he had a stock of 700 maunds of potato bought from different markets at Tk 350,000 in February- March this year. He has already sold 300 maunds of potato at Tk 240,000. The trader expected that the rest of the potato would fetch Tk 340,000 if the market price remains favourable.
The DAE opined that there is no alternative to promoting modern technology and using high yielding potato seeds to reduce dependence on food import to meet the domestic demand as it plays an important role in ensuring food security as its consumption is increasing day by day.
