Govt has no plans to shut down Facebook
The government has dismissed as 'unverified' reports published in a section of the media that spoke of a temporary clampdown on the social networking site Facebook in a bid to curb cheating and question paper leakage ahead of the primary and ebtedayee education completion (PEC) exams.
Primary and Mass Education Secretary Md Ashiq-uz-Zaman, speaking to bdnews24.com on Tuesday, said, "The question (of shutting down Facebook) does not arise".
Earlier netizens had reacted with anger to reports of the government’s intention to impose a ban on Facebook use ahead of the exams that begin November 20.
Zaman asked, "From where do they publish such news without verifying it?"
He said that the menace of cheating had to be curbed. However, he disapproved of stopping social media sites as a mechanism to do that, according to a news agency. – bz
