Stipend for migrants’ children

Govt doubles number of beneficiaries

FE Report

The government has doubled the number of beneficiaries of the stipend programme for migrants' children from this year to help continue their education, said officials.

The number of recipients of the stipend now stands at 1,500 persons from 700 earlier. Students obtaining GPA-5 from different levels will be provided with the stipend money, said assistant director at the Wage Earners' Welfare Board (WEWB) Zahid Anwar.

The children of dead migrant workers will have some flexibility in the rules. In their case, students obtaining GPA-4 will be eligible for receiving the money. Besides, poor migrants' children will be given priority in the programme, he said.

He said the board has recently approved the issue and they are now sorting out the list of applicants. "Most probably the stipend will be distributed by October."

The candidates will have to show legal documents of their father or mother like work permit and BMET (Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training) clearance etc, said Mr Anwar.

The students will have to be regular in their study to qualify for the scholarship. The money has been allocated from the wage earners' welfare fund, he added.

Each student from the levels of primary school certificate, Junior School Certificate (JSC), Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) will get Tk 900, Tk 1000, Tk 1500 and Tk 2000 respectively per month to bear their educational expanses.

They will also be provided with Tk 1500, Tk 2000, Tk 3000 and Tk 3000 respectively for study materials yearly.
