BTRC postpones mobile portability auction
The telecom regulator has postponed the proceedings of Mobile Number Portability Service (MNPS) licence auction "for the time being".
In a notice published on its website Tuesday, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission said that it has decided to suspend the overall MNP auction proceedings due to "unavoidable circumstances".
"The new time-table of MNPS auction will be published by the commission later on," the notice said.
The auctioning was originally scheduled to be held on September 21, which was later deferred to September 28. A total of five joint-venture companies have been qualified for participating in the auctioning.
These companies are REVE Number Ltd, Greentech International Ltd, Infozillion BD Teletech Consortium Limited, Brazil-Bangladesh Consortium and Roots Infotech Ltd.
All the qualified companies are joint-venture firms, four of which have European entities as partners and one of them has a Brazilian partner.
Once operational, the MNP scheme will allow a mobile number subscriber to switch from one operator to another without having to change the existing number.
The MNP licence would be issued for 15 years, which would be renewable for another five years and the operator has to deposit Tk 10 million as bank guarantee.
The operators can charge Tk. 30 from a subscriber for the facility, while the subscriber will have to wait for 45 days after getting the facility to switch operators.
The operator has to share 5.5 per cent revenue with the government from the second year of the licence, according to the guideline.
