HC summons Sakhipur UNO, OC
The High Court summoned upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and police station officer-in-charge (OC) of Tangail’s Sakhipur over handing down two-year jail to a schoolboy.
The court asked two local officials UNO Mohammad Rafiqul Islam and OC Md Maksudul Alam to appear before the court on September 27.
HC also directed them to show cause for handing down a two-year jail sentence to a schoolboy over alleged threats to an Awami League lawmaker via Facebook.
The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das passed the order on a suo moto move on Tuesday after Supreme Court lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan placed a news report on the matter before them.
The report, published in a national daily, said Tangail-8 MP Anupom Shahjahan Joy filed a general diary against the schoolboy on charge of “threatening” through Facebook on Sunday.
Police detained the boy on Saturday from Protima Bonki area of the upazila following the GD. Later a mobile court led by UNO Islam, who is also an executive magistrate, sentenced the ninth grader. On Monday morning, OC Alam sent the boy to Tangail District Jail.
Advocate Khurshid Alam told bdnews24.com: “I have told the bench that the matter was still under investigation following a general diary.
"A mobile court cannot hand down such punishments while the matter is under investigation. Also, the accused is a minor. Therefore, he needs to be tried under the Juvenile Justice System.”
The bench has also granted permanent bail to the boy. –RH
