The Department of Social Services (DSS) distributed Tk 596.30 million as various allowances among 91,281 beneficiaries in Rangpur district during the last 2015-2016 fiscal year.
The DSS distributed the allowances under the government's comprehensive social safety net programme.
They distributed the allowances among elderly citizens, disabled people, freedom fighters, physically challenged students, widows and divorces in all eight upazilas of the district.
Under the programme, more than Tk 276.50 million was distributed among 57,607 elderly citizens as old age allowance at the rate of Tk 400 per month to assist them leading a better life.
Over Tk 51.10 million was distributed with monthly allowance of Tk 500 among each of the beneficiary 8,518 physically challenged people in the upazilas.
Tk 152.40 million was distributed among 1,270 freedom fighters (FFs) with Tk 10,000 as monthly allowance in the district during the last fiscal year.
Tk 6.87 million was distributed as sub-stipends among the 1,085 physically challenged students at the primary, secondary, higher secondary and higher education levels.
Of them, Tk 2.56 million was distributed with Tk 400 per month allowance among each of the 535 primary level physically challenged students and Tk 1.95 million with Tk 500 among each of the 325 secondary level students.
Tk 1.24 million was distributed with Tk 700 per month allowance among each of the 148 higher secondary level and Tk 1.10 million with Tk 1,200 per month allowance among each of the beneficiary 77 university level physically challenged students.
Besides, the DSS Also distributed over Tk 109.40 million with Tk 400 per month as widow and divorcee allowances among each of the 22,801 beneficiaries.
Assistant Director of DSS Abdul Matin on Tuesday said that the allowance distribution programme was continuing for the same number of beneficiaries in different categories during the current fiscal year in the district, according to a news agency report.
