Customs officials seize robot, spy devices at HSIA
Customs intelligence officials seized an illegally imported 15-kg healthcare robot and several spy devices at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka.
Moinul Khan, Director General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID), on Monday said that Global Communications, a Chittagong-based firm, imported these equipments from China claiming they were 'toys and computer accessories' on September 8, reports bdnews24.com.
He said the consignment was temporarily seized outside the airfreight unit while attempts were being made to have it unloaded.
A post on the Customs Intelligence's Facebook page in the morning said that the shipment weighed 325 kilograms and the equipments were found inside 24 cartons.
The 15-kg healthcare robot, which cannot be imported without clearance from the Directorate General of Drug Administration, was among them.
The post said 120 smartwatches, 10 mini digital cameras and 25 pen cameras were also found, which intelligence officials said were used for spying and secret communication.
The shipment also had different kind of networking accessories including 63 Ethernet switches, 25 antennas and 19 base stations.
Moinul Khan said a clearance from Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) was required to import these equipments.
He added that they would take legal action against Global Communications for importing these devices under a false inventory.
Meanwhile, a news agency said, BTRC issued a notice on Monday saying importers of such illegal devices will be brought to book. Telecom authorities also said they will crack down on illegal radio devices. –RH
