Modern agro-technology enhances radish production in Rangpur
RANGPUR, Sept 18: The radish cultivators of different areas in the district are attaining a plentiful yield of their produce this year on account of a congenial weather condition and timely supply of required agri-inputs.
The growers are also making handsome profit from the sale of the popular vegetable in markets.
From the region a large quantity of vegetables including radish are being supplied to different markets of many places of the country including the capital.
Rabiul Mia, a farmer of Boiriganj village under Mithapukur Upazila, said he has been cultivating radish on his 40 decimals of land for the last few years. Last year he earned satisfactory profit from its sale due to early harvest. This year he has already earned Tk 16,000 and is expecting more.
Vobenda Chandra, another farmer of Mandrain village under Gangachara Upazila, said he has cultivated the tasty vegetable on 35 decimals of his lands this year. He said many farmers across the district have become financially solvent within few years through radish farming.
Besides, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the growers of Mithapukur, Gangachara Taraganj, Kawnia, Pirgachha upazilas are expected to produce a large quantity of vegetables including radish this season, as they prefer cultivating vegetables than the other crops.
Farhan, a trader from Dhaka, said as fresh vegetables are available at different markets of Rangpur, he can purchase adequate amount of those at a reasonable rate.
Local sources said uses of modern technologies and quick compost have enhanced the production of vegetables significantly in the region. Early harvesting also ensures a good price for the cultivators.
Farmers urged the government to take necessary steps to erect more cold storages in the region so that they can preserve massive quantity of vegetables.
