GAIBANDHA, Sept 18: A total of 1,10,742 ultra poor of all the seven upazilas in the district have been brought under the government's most generous poor friendly food aid programme recently.
This was disclosed by district food controller M Amzad Hossain in a monthly district coordination committee meeting held at the conference room of district collectorate building here today with deputy commissioner (DC) M Abdus Samad in the chair.
Of the total, some 19,500 beneficiaries were selected in Sadar Upazila, 12,830 in Shaghata, 13,287 in Sadullapur, 22,274 in Sundarganj, 23,204 in Gobindaganj, 11,361 in Palashbari and 8,286 in Phulchhari upazilas, the official said.
The objective of the programme is to make rice available for ultra-poor at a very low price so that they could pass their days without hardship and food crisis during the lean season, he also said.
Under the programme, a card holder would get 150 kgs of rice at the rate of Tk 10 per kg in five months-March, April, September, October and November a year during the lean period when job crisis like situation prevailed among the day-labourers, he added.
The programme had already been launched in Sadar and Gobindaganj upazilas of the district and it would start for the selected poor of other five upazilas here very soon, he expected.
The DC said female-led families, widows, divorced or abandoned women and the poor households with children were given priority while selecting beneficiaries of the food support programme.
The government had allocated Tk 21 billion for food-support programme to distribute food among the poor with Tk 27 subsidy in per kg of rice, said the DC.
The DC also cautioned the concerned officials and public representatives and tag officers to distribute rice to the beneficiary poor properly rising above all sorts of irregularities and criticism.
