60,000 people get old-age allowance in Rajshahi

Around 60,000 poor and distressed people get old age allowance in Rajshahi as a part of govenment’s safety net programme, said Department of Social Service (DSS).

Sources from the local office informed that they have disbursed around Tk 287.8 million among them in 2015-16 fiscal, reports BSS.

Among the allowance recipients, 54,641 are regular and 5,314 additional.

DSS office also disbursed Tk 114.2 million among 23,794 widows during the same period.

Of them, 21,817 are regular and 1,977 additional. Some 10,000 elderly people and 530 others with special needs are getting allowance from the government under its social safety net programme in Rajshahi city.

Rubina Yeasmin, deputy director of DSS, said the beneficiaries have been getting their respective allowance timely through their own bank accounts.

"Considering their vulnerable condition, the government has increased their old-age-allowance and also number of beneficiaries from the current fiscal," she said. - IH
