High incidence of diabetes

THE number of people with diabetes patient is increasing across the world and our country is no exception. The number of diabetic patients in our country has risen from 110 million in 1980 to 425 million in 2014. The sharp rise is alarming.  We should remain alert against this disease as it has no cure and can only be kept under check. Especially those who have diabetes in their family should remain extra careful to stay free from diabetes. The prevalence among the adults of over 18 is 8.5 per cent.

Diabetes is rising in the middle and lower income countries and Bangladesh is one of them. The world observes the World Diabetes Day on November 14 every year to increase awareness about the disease among the common people. In fact, awareness is the key weapon to fight against diabetes. Half of the diabetic patients are unaware of the disease and it makes things worse for them. It is estimated that about 12 per cent of global health expenditure is spent on diabetes. We all hope that the medical science will soon be able to find a permanent cure for diabetes and relieve millions of patients of suffering from the disease.
