Road crashes kill 17 in 3 dists

At least 17 people were killed and 30 others injured in different road accidents in Brahmanbaria, Tangail and Madaripur districts on Friday.

According to bdnews24.com, eight people were killed and at least three others injured after a bus and a microbus collided head-on on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Brahmanbaria's Bijoynagar.

The accident occurred in Shashai Islampur area around 9:45am on Friday, said Khatihata highway police OC Md Humayun Kabir.

All the victims, seven men and a child, were passengers of the microbus, he said.

Quoting witnesses, Kabir said all the seven victims had died on the spot when the Dhaka-bound Ena Paribahan bus crashed into with the microbus.

Another died while undergoing treatment at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital after being rushed there with those injured. All the bodies were kept at the hospital's morgue.

Two Fire Service units from Habiganj and Brahmanbaria had conducted rescue operations after arriving on the scene. The crash disrupted vehicular movement on the highway for an hour.

Traffic returned to normal after the damaged vehicles were moved.

Another report of bdnews24.com adds, five persons were killed and at least 18 others injured after a Gazipur-bound bus overturned at Tangail's Kalihati Upazila.

Gorai highway police's Elenga outpost In-Charge Sergeant Jahangir Alam said the accident happened in Pungli area on Dhaka-Tangail Highway around 5:30am.

He said the bus was carrying a group of readymade garments workers who were on their way to Gazipur's Safipur.

They were coming from Lalmonirhat's Patgram after spending the Eid holidays with their families.

"The vehicle overturned when the driver lost control. Three of the passengers died on the spot," he added.

Twenty other wounded were being rushed to Tangail Medical College Hospital (TMCH) where one of them succumbed to the injuries, Jahangir said.

Another person died while undergoing treatment at the hospital later.

He identified the deceased as 'Asma', 40, 'Mominur', 41, 'Asadul', 15, 'Sumon', 35, and 'Ripon', 30.

Tangail's Deputy Commissioner Mahbub Hossain announced that Tk 20,000 will be given as financial aid to families of each of the deceased and Tk 10,000 each to the families of the injured.

A news agency reports, at least four people were killed and 12 others injured when a bus collided with a microbus in Rajoir upazila of Madaripur district on Friday afternoon

Rajoir Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Nazmul Hossain confirmed this to the news agency.

Three deceased were identified as Belal Sheikh, 50, Babul, 35, Merin Akter, 27. Identity of another deceased is yet to be confirmed. The injured were rushed to the local hospitals, he added. –RH
