BD, India discuss MoU on Blue Economy
DHAKA, May 10: The first meeting of Joint Working Group (JWG) to operationalise the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Blue Economy and Maritime Cooperation in the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean Region, signed during the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Bangladesh in June 2015, was held here on Monday.
The Bangladesh delegation, led by Rear Admiral (retd) Md Khurshed Alam, Secretary (Maritime Affairs Unit), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Indian delegation by Sujata Mehta, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, India were present at the meeting, said a handout.
Both sides discussed possible areas of cooperation under the MoU for further strengthening the bilateral relations.
Discussions pertained to cooperation in capacity building and training, sharing of information and joint research in several areas, including marine biotechnology, green tourism and hospitality, marine aquaculture, deep sea fishing, maritime pollution response, ocean disasters and services, for mutual benefit.
The two sides agreed to meet at regular intervals to monitor the progress of cooperation activities being undertaken under this MoU.
The Indian delegation also met State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque, according to a news agency.
