Good governance, accountability must in public expenditure
Eminent economist Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud on Saturday stressed on ensuring good governance and accountability in public expenditure. Professor Mahmud said that for better outcome of the development goals, accountably should be ensured in public expenditure.
He said that specific targets should be fixed which would also help to ensure monitoring the results of the corresponding budget allocation and midterm and longterm planning vision of the country.
Professor Mahmud, Chairman of the Panel of Economists for the 7th Five Year Plan (7FYP) was speaking at a working session of the Inter-Ministerial Consultation Workshop on Integration of SDGs into the 7FYP in Cox’s Bazar, according to a press release.
Senior Secretary of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) Mohammad Mejbahuddin spoke as the chief guest.
Mejbahuddin said the government will increase investments in social sectors and also ensure good governance for institutional capacity building.
Pauline Tamesis, Country Director of the UNDP, also spoke at the working session as the guests of honour.
Among others, Naquib bin Mahbub, Chief of General Economics Division (GED) of Planning Commission, Fakrul Ahsan, Project Manager of the SSIP project, also spoke. Dr. Binayak Sen, Research Director of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) and Monirul Islam, Deputy Chief of GED presented several papers.
GED in collaboration with the Support to Sustainable and Inclusive Planning (SSIP) Project has organised the three-day consultation workshop which started on Friday. Seventy participants from 35 ministries and divisions and UNDP is participating in the workshop which will conclude on Sunday. – Kibria
