Bhutan has agreed to work with Bangladesh to explore its potential of hydropower generation and export it to Bangladesh, said a senior official of the Commence Ministry on Tuesday.
“Bhutan has expressed very positive attitude and agreed today to export hydropower to our country,” joint secretary of the Commerce Ministry M Munir Chowdhury told UNB after a meeting with a visiting Bhutanese delegation.
The two-day commerce secretary-level meeting between Bangladesh and Bhutan began in the capital on Tuesday to discuss regional connectivity, transit, tariff and non-tariff barriers and hydroelectricity. The meeting is being held at Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute (BFTI) in the capital.
Senior Secretary of the Commerce Ministry Hedayetullah Al Mamoon is leading a 17-member Bangladesh delegation to the meeting while Economic Affairs Secretary of Bhutan Dasho Yeshi Wangdi a 10-member Bhutanese team.
About the outcomes of the first day’s meeting, Munir Chowdhury said both Bangladesh and Bhutan emphasised involving India in power transmission as the hydropower to be generated by Bhutan will be supplied to Bangladesh through Indian territory.
