Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday told the Jatiya Sangsad her government has a plan to construct flyovers, underground rail line, sky rail and circular rail lines to ease the city's awful traffic congestion and facilitate the public transportation system, reports BSS.
Replying to a question she said apart from this, the government has a plan to develop orbital waterways and road communications around the Dhaka city.
Elaborating her vision, she said implementation of the project to increase the number of wide-bodied buses with increased seat capacity is at the final stage and steps have been taken to bring down the number of small vehicles including three-wheelers being operated on commercial basis on city roads.
The Prime Minister said the government has taken road expansion project on
Gabtali-Sowarighat embankments. Besides, gradual expansion of the city, easing traffic jam and keeping the city free from flood would be possible with the implementation of "Dhaka Integrated Flood Control cum Eastern Bypass Road Multi-purpose Project", she said.
The Prime Minister informed the house that the construction work of the 3rd Buriganga bridge at Bosila under Mohammadpur thana and the 2nd Shitalakhya bridge at Demra under Kuwait fund were in progress.
About air pollution, she said steps have been taken to phase out the 20-year old vehicles running on commercial basis from the city so that the city dwellers could inhale fresh air. "Various measurers have also been taken for the development of road communications in the city," she said.
These include expansion of road communications from Bijoy Sarani to Tejgaon, introducing circular waterways around the Dhaka city, upgrading Zia International Airport, construction of link bridge from Tejgaon Aarong to Gulshan Shooting Club, implementing integrated development project in Hatijheer area with Begunbari and steps taken to stop river bank grabbing of the Buriganga.
Sheikh Hasina said her government in line with her party's election pledges and vision had undertaken massive programmes for increasing income of the people and improving their livelihood.
She said a total of 27 projects are being implemented in the current (2009-2010) fiscal year in infrastructure, health, environment and socio-economic sectors and improving living standard of the city people and increasing their income.
