Garment workers from a human chain in the city Saturday urged all concerned, including the government, to fix their minimum wage at Tk 5,000 per month, reports UNB.

"It's essential to fix our minimum wage at Tk 5,000 a month so that the families of 2.5 million (25 lakh) garment workers may have two square meals a day", National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) president Amirul Islam Amin said.

The NGWF formed the hour-long human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club at noon on the day marking the International Poverty Alleviation Day.

Also present at the human chain were NGWF central leaders M Farook Khan, Sultana Aktar and Arju Ara.

The minimum wage of workers is only Tk 1,662 in the country now while the World Bank says that those earning Tk 4,200 a month are living below the poverty line, the NGWF president said.

He also demanded the multinational companies ensure due prices of Bangladeshi products.
