Labour laws to be updated in line with ILO convention: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the existing labour laws of the country would be updated and made time befitting in line with the ILO convention, reports BSS.

She said this while addressing the leaders and workers of Bangladesh Sramik League as they called on her at her official residence Jamuna this morning on the occasion of 40th founding anniversary of the organization Monday.

Sramik League President Abdul Matin Master and General Secretary Roy Ramesh Chandra led the delegation.

Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh Awami League and her government are working relentlessly for bringing changes to the fate of the working class of people. She also assured them of taking necessary steps so that they could get adequate wages for a better living.

Referring to a number of jute mills and factories, including Adamjee Jute Mills, closing down during the tenure of BNP-Jamaat led alliance government, she said her government has taken pragmatic steps to reopen these mills and factories.

In this connection, Sheikh Hasina also referred to her government's efforts for creating employment opportunities for the working class both at home and abroad for achieving economic uplift of the country.

She mentioned that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his own initiative formed the Sramik League on this day in 1969 for the welfare of the working class of people of the country.

Earlier, the Sramik League leaders presented bouquets and a monogram of the organisation to the Prime Minister on the occasion.

They also paid rich tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at his portrait at Bangabandhu Bhaban in the city this morning.

Minister for Labour and Employment and Expatriate Welfare Eng Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan and State Minister Begum Munnujan Sufian, among others, were present on the occasion.
