Woman among three killed in city

Three people, including a woman, were killed in as many incidents in the capital Sunday, police and hospital sources said.

Police said a woman was stabbed to death allegedly by her in-laws at Hazaribagh in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Hazera Begum, 25, wife of Abul Kalam, a Saudi wage-earner.

Hospital sources said Hazera and her husband's nephew Sohel, 20, locked in an altercation over financial matters at noon.

At one stage, Sohel stabbed Hazera indiscriminately, leaving her critically injured.

The victim was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with multiple stab injuries. Attending doctors declared her dead at 2:00pm.

Meanwhile, a young man, who was earlier severely wounded in an a stabbing incident at Amin Bazar in Savar, succumbed to injuries at Suhrawardy Hospital in the city early morning.

The deceased was identified as Monir Hossain, 25, an employee of City Gas & Company of Anandabazar in old Dhaka.

Monir, a BA student of Govt. Kazi Nazrul Islam College in the capital, was stabbed at Amin Bazar on Saturday evening while he was going to Jamalpur in a pick-up van on business, his co-workers said.

Mohammad Masum, driver of the pick-up van, said that he saw a man running away with a blood-stained knife in his hand, while he was busy changing a flat tyre of the van.

He found Monir in a pool of blood, he said.

Monir was rushed to Suhrawardy Hospital where he died at noon, hospital sources said.

Savar police arrested both the driver and the helper of the van for their contradictory eye-witness accounts.

A case was filed in this regard.

In another incident, a man was killed in a road accident in the city's Sadarghat area as he tried to save his son from getting crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus.

The deceased was identified as Sohrab Hossain, 38, of Sirajganj and an employee of South Hatiya range of Forest Department.
