BANDARBAN, Aug 1 (UNB) : In the wake of massive landslides that killed 10 people early Friday in Lama Upazila, the local administration Saturday started shifting people from vulnerable foothills and slopes to safer places.

The government has asked the District Administration and UNOs of seven upazilas of the district to shift vulnerable people to safer places to avert recurrence of such tragic incidents.

In the first phase, around 200 people were moved to safer places in Sadar and Lama upazilas Saturday and each family was provided with 10 kgs of rice.

Meanwhile, the district administration gave Tk 10,000 to each of the victim who died in Friday's mudslides at Aziznagar Union in the Upazila.

Sources said nearly 25,000 people are living on foothills and slopes at Islampur, Hafezghona, Langipara, Kashempara, Banrupapara and Kalghata in the district, putting their lives at risk.

Mudslides buried many people in these areas on various occasions in the past as most of the houses were made by cutting hills in an unplanned way.

At least 10 people, six of a family, were killed and 12 others injured in landslides triggered by heavy downpour at separate places in Lama Upazila of the hill district early Friday.
