Speakers at a seminar Saturday called upon all to remain alert so that unconstitutional forces cannot take power further, saying that the forces are the enemy of democracy as well as the country and nation, reports BSS.

"The progress of the country's democracy was halted repeatedly since the independence due to capturing power by the unconstitutional governments," they told a seminar.

The speakers also called for restoration of the 1972 constitution to consolidate the democracy and establish equal rights of the citizens.

"There is no need for legal battle as the present parliament is enough for going back to the 1972 constitution," they opined.

They pointed out that fundamentalism mainly spread in the country during the rule of late President Ziaur Rahman.

Economist and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Undertakings, Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, attended the function as the chief guest.

Parliament members Jafar Iqbal Siddiqui and Noor-e-Hasna Lily Chowdhury, eminent Journalist Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury, Professor Imtiaz Ahmed, Professor Ashrafuddin Chowdhury and Professor Anisuzzaman of Dhaka University, Dr Goura Govinda Goswami of North South University and president of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Shahriar Kabir took part in the discussion, among others.

ABM Nasir, Professor of the University of North Carolina and visiting professor of North South University, presented the keynote paper, while Heritage Foundation Chairman Waliur Rahman presided over the seminar.
