Prices of onion, egg up in city markets

Prices of both local and imported onion and egg increased in the city's retail markets during the last one week while that of other essential commodities including rice, edible oil, vegetables remained stable.

A medium-sized hilsha was selling at Tk 700 - Tk 1000. Shrimp was selling at Tk 500 - Tk 600 per kg, market sources said.

"Shing', which is being farmed locally witnessed a downward trend and was selling at Tk 500-Tk 800 against the previous price of Tk 1000 per kg.

Different sweet water fishes such as ruhi was selling at Tk 200-Tk 250, katla Tk 220-Tk 250 per kg and poya Tk 200 per kg, pangas Tk 140 - Tk 150 per kg. Other local fishes including puti, tengra, magur were selling at prices between Tk 250 to Tk 300 per kg on an average.

Besides, prices of potato remained steady and were selling at Tk 24 per kg.

Prices of ginger and garlic witnessed the same trend at the retail level. The local and imported Chinese varieties were selling at Tk 60 and Tk 40 per kg. Similarly garlic was selling at Tk 60 per kg.

According to retail traders in the city's different rice markets, prices of fine varieties were stable.

'Minicate' and 'Nazirshail' prices were Tk 31- Tk 33 per kg and Tk 36- Tk 38 per kg respectively on an average last week. On the other hand coarse varieties of rice including BR-28 were selling at Tk 24-Tk 25 per kg, Pari Tk 23 and Swarna Tk 21- Tk 22 per kg on an average at the city's retail level.

Imported Indian onion was selling at Tk 26- Tk 27 per kg which was Tk 22- Tk 23 per kg a week ago while a kilo of local onion was selling at Tk 34 against the previous price Tk 26- Tk 28 per kg.

In the past week, prices of different non-brand edible oils such as soybean and super palm oil sold at Tk 85 and Tk 80- Tk 81 respectively on an average.

During the last week, prices of different brands of edible oil in five litre cans ranged between Tk 420 and Tk 430 on an average at the retail level.

Traders said retail prices of local lentil remained steady in the city markets. On Friday, a kilo of local lentil sold at Tk 105-Tk 110. Imported Nepalese and Turkish varieties was selling Tk 85-Tk 90 per kg.

Non-brand sugar was selling at Tk 38-Tk 40 per kg.

Market sources said the retail prices of eggs were up by Tk 6 in the retail market. Both farm and local eggs were selling at Tk 30 for a foursome against its previous retail rate Tk 24.

Prices of poultry birds were Tk 120-Tk 140 per kg on an average. A kilogram of beef was priced at Tk 220-Tk 230 and mutton Tk 300- Tk 350 per kg on an average at the city's retail outlets.

On Friday, some vegetables including lady's finger was selling at Tk 24- Tk 26 per kg, brinjal Tk 24- Tk 30, papaya Tk 14- Tk 16, a medium-sized gourd Tk 35-Tk 40, bitter gourd TK 24-Tk 26, and a kg of green chili Tk 44- Tk 48 per kg in the city's retail markets.

Cucumber was being sold at prices between Tk 24 and Tk 28 per kg, tomato between Tk 36 and Tk 40 per kg and potal Tk 20-Tk 24 per kg on an average in the retail outlets.
