BAGHDAD, June 30 (AP): The US military says that four soldiers were killed in Baghdad on the eve of the American withdrawal from Iraq's cities.

The military says the four served with the Multi-National Division-Baghdad but did not provide further details pending notification of their families.

In a statement Tuesday, the US military said the four were died on Monday as a "result of combat related injuries."

Iraqi forces assumed formal control of Baghdad and other cities Tuesday after American troops handed over security in urban areas in a defining step toward ending the US combat role in the country. Iraq has declared June 30 as "National Sovereignty Day."
