Leading cement manufacturer Lafarge Surma Cement Limited commissioned a library for local children near the company's plant at Chhatak in Sunamganj Monday, said a press release.
Chhatak Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Motiul Islam Chowdhury and Lafarge Surma Cement Plant Manager Chang J Song jointly inaugurated the library located at the Community Development Centre set up under the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme of Lafarge Surma.
Head of Communication and CSR Mohiuddin Babar, Community Relations Manager Shabbir Hossain, Financial Controller Fakhruzzaman Chowdhury and other senior officials of the cement factory were present on the occasion. Local union council leaders, journalists and village elders were also present.
The library has catalogued hundreds of books on children stories, history, geography, general knowledge, life sketches of great people as well as novels written by eminent writers of the country.
Speaking on the occasion the UNO expressed his hope that the library would bring benefit to the local children.
"It will help create a reading habit among young people which is very important in developing individual intellectual capacity," he added.
The UNO praised the efforts of Lafarge Surma Cement in extending welfare services to the local community.
Lafarge Surma's Head of Communication and CSR Babar said that the library is an addition to the various welfare programmes for the local community.
"It will help the local children to advance their knowledge on different subjects and stimulate their pursuits of learning," he added.
