CHITTAGONG, June 25: Speakers at a discussion held today on the recently announced national budget hailed the Five Year Planning (2010-2015) package undertaken by the government for achieving "Millennium Development Goals" and supported the initiative of expanding the purview of taxes as the source of increasing income.
The meeting was arranged under the auspices of Southern University Bangladesh (SUB) with its Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof AJM Nuruddin Chowdhury in the chair.
The speakers called for declaring different incentive packages, reducing corporate taxes including reduction of the difference in the imposed taxes between listed and non-listed companies, etc.
VC Chowdhury while presiding over the meeting underscored the need for modernising the mode of realising VAT and called upon the government to allocate adequate fund in the budget so that the main export head of the country-the garments industries-are not affected by the global recession.
SUB pro-VC Dr Sharifuzzaman, Shamsuzzaman, Mohiuddin Chowdhury and founder of the University Sarwar Jahan also took part in the discussion, among others.
