CHITTAGONG, Apr 25: Revenue earnings from vessel repair at Chittagong Dry Dock Ltd (CDDL) has fallen around 10 to 12 per cent in the last few months due to the prevailing global recession.
In view of this, CDDL has sent a proposal to the Bangladesh Steel Engineering Corporation (BSEC) to allow 5 per cent concession to the vessel owners for repair work.
CDDL sources said, 20 to 25 vessels are repaired annually by CDDL, an industrial unit of BSEC.
CDDL sources however described the impact of global downtrend on dry dock industry as a normal one and called for undertaking different steps in line with the measures adopted by other prominent ship builders of the world.
Sources further said it has rather become essential for installing new machinery for raising the production capacity. Establishment of new dry dock would help augment earning of the organisation and create fresh employment opportunity.
Beside repairing vessels, CDDL also manufactures heavy machinery, steel bridge parts for different government and private organisations.
