DU to confer 'honorary doctorates' on three personalities

The Dhaka University (DU) will confer 'honorary doctorate degrees' on three renowned personalities at its 45th convocation on January 29, reports BSS.

The university will confer honorary doctorate degree to Nobel Laureate Emirates Professor Yuan Tseh Lee of Taiwan.

Professor Lee, who won Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1986, is the President of Institute of Atomic and Molecular Science Academia Sinica of Taipei-based Genomic Research Centre.

During the convocation, the DU will also confer 'doctorate of science, Honoris Causa' degree on Professor Abul Hussam, who is also a professor of George-Mason University of the USA.

Professor Abul Hussam also received Graainger Challenge Gold Medal from National Academy of Engineers' of USA in 2007 for innovation of 'Sono Filter' to remove arsenic from drinking water.

Professor Hussam was the student of Chemistry Department of the DU.

The university also decided to confer an honorary doctorate degree to noted historian Prof Ranajit Guha in the convocation.

The decision was taken to give honorary doctorates to three persons on the basis of recommendation of the DU deans committee meeting recently.
